Gyeongbokgung Palace : A Top Korea Travel Destination You Shouldn't Miss

Gyeongbokgung Palace: A Must-Visit Historical Gem in Seoul 🇰🇷

Located in the heart of Seoul, between Bukchon and Gwanghwamun, Gyeongbokgung Palace is a must-see destination. I’ve passed by it many times, but I finally decided to visit it properly. This palace, where tradition and modernity coexist, is one of the best spots to experience Korea’s rich history. In this post, I’m going to share my experience visiting Gyeongbokgung and some helpful tips!

🏯 What is Gyeongbokgung Palace?

Gyeongbokgung is the first of the Five Grand Palaces built during the Joseon Dynasty. It was constructed in 1395 by King Taejo (Lee Seong-gye). The name "Gyeongbok" means "great blessing." Although it was destroyed during the Japanese invasions of the late 16th century and later rebuilt during the reign of King Gojong, much of it was damaged during the Japanese occupation. Nowadays, restoration efforts are

underway, and the palace is gradually regaining its former glory.

🎎 Hanbok Rental Tips

Wearing a hanbok, a traditional Korean outfit, is a great way to enhance your experience at Gyeongbokgung. Not only does it allow you to enjoy the cultural atmosphere, but you also get free admission to the palace!

📌 Hanbok Rental Information:

  • Price: Basic hanbok rentals start around 10,000 KRW for 1-2 hours. Premium hanboks cost 20,000-30,000 KRW.
  • Rental Duration: You can choose from 2-hour, 4-hour, or full-day rentals.
  • What’s Included: Hanbok, basic hairstyling, and accessories like bags or ornamental pins.

✅ Hanbok Rental Tips:

  1. Book in advance: Some shops get busy, especially during peak times.
  2. Dress accordingly: Wear light clothes under the hanbok, especially in summer, as it can get quite warm.
  3. Comfortable Shoes: Although traditional hanbok shoes are cute, they can be uncomfortable, so I recommend wearing flat shoes underneath (no one will notice!).

📸 Best Spots for Photos

  • The center of Geunjeongjeon
  • The Gyeonghoeru Pavilion by the water
  • The stone bridge at Hyangwonjeong Pavilion
  • The view of Heungnyemun Gate (perfect for wide-angle shots!)

I went around 3-4 PM, and the lighting was perfect for photos. If you're into photography, I highly recommend visiting during golden hour for that soft, beautiful light!

🧡 Final Thoughts

Gyeongbokgung is a place with deep historical significance, but it’s also visually stunning, especially for photos. It’s perfect for a romantic date or a family outing, and I’m definitely planning to visit again during the evening hours for a different experience. Did you know they have a night-time tour with special lighting? I’d love to try it next time!

If you're in Seoul or planning to visit, don’t miss out on Gyeongbokgung Palace. It’s a beautiful escape into Korea’s past, and you’ll enjoy every moment of your visit.

Feel free to ask any questions about visiting, renting hanbok, or anything else related to Gyeongbokgung. I’ll be happy to share more in future posts! 😊
